On the twentieth of February, Cyprus launched a countrywide system designed to tackle problem gambling. This system, known as the “Individual Self-Exclusion System,” represents a crucial element of the nation’s strategy to encourage responsible gaming from 2022 to 2025.
The system allows users to opt for self-restriction from all gaming activities for a predetermined duration or even indefinitely. Notably, they retain the ability to access their profiles to retrieve any remaining balances.
Ioanna Fiakkou, the director of the National Wagering Authority, stressed that this constitutes a potent instrument for safeguarding susceptible individuals. She further noted that the system underscores the Authority’s dedication to fostering a sustainable and equitable gaming landscape.
Initially, the system solely encompasses online gaming providers authorized under the Authority’s “Class B” designation, but it is projected to broaden its scope to incorporate other forms of wagering in the future.
This complimentary procedure encompasses all gaming services and vendors. Users who elect self-exclusion are barred from engaging in gambling on any pre-existing accounts and are prohibited from establishing new ones.
Fiacou further stated that they are urging all stakeholders in the athletic realm to establish specialized platforms for competitors and other parties, ensuring collaboration with the appropriate regulatory authorities and national bodies.
He stressed that this action would enhance the battle against dishonesty and increase openness in sporting events – a paramount objective for the agency.
Fiacou also conveyed his satisfaction with the advancements made toward a more secure wagering environment, emphasizing how this endeavor strengthens public safeguards, diminishes weaknesses, and fosters sustainability within the sector.
It’s noteworthy that Cyprus is not solitary in its endeavors. Australia recently introduced its own self-exclusion platform, BetStop, just prior to the festive period, and the preliminary registration figures have been encouraging.
