Swedens administration’s suggestion to prohibit the utilization of credit cards for wagering has sparked significant resistance from the Swedish internet gaming trade group, BOS.
The Treasury unveiled the proposed prohibition, asserting that employing credit cards for betting can result in financial strain. They contend that a total ban is essential to control excessive indebtedness and would signify that gaming enterprises would no longer be permitted to receive credit card transactions.
Notably, this action reflects a comparable prohibition implemented in Britain in April 2020. While there were a few dissenting opinions at the time, the UK gaming sector generally embraced the credit card prohibition without much opposition.
The BOS, however, is striking a different chord in Sweden. This appears to contradict their prior position of advocating for more robust credit limitations to safeguard consumers. They had previously consented to proposals that fell short of a complete prohibition on credit card gaming.
The Chief Executive of BOS, a Swedish gaming industry group, Gustaf Hoffstedt, has condemned a government proposal to prohibit the use of credit cards for wagering. Hoffstedt notes that this contradicts the government’s own studies, which indicate that credit card usage is not a significant contributor to gambling addiction.
He contrasts this with the state’s regulation of alcohol sales, emphasizing the inconsistency of prohibiting credit card use for gambling while alcohol, a substance known to be far more harmful, is readily available. Hoffstedt contends that this prohibition would only drive more gamblers to the unregulated market, where they lack the same safeguards.
Hoffstedt has consistently championed a safer gambling environment in Sweden, previously challenging the government for increasing the gaming levy. He maintains that a cooperative strategy between the government and licensed providers is essential to guarantee consumer protection and responsible gaming habits.
