The Responsible Gaming Association of Australia (RGA) and its affiliates have expressed approval of this recent legislation. RGA Chief Executive, Kai Cantwell, remarked that this measure will simplify the process for individuals to manage their gaming practices and commended it as a significant stride in safeguarding gamblers and their relatives. He further emphasized that this new law will enhance the existing safer gaming account management instruments already provided by RGA members.
Nevertheless, Cantwell also conveyed apprehensions regarding the omission of lottery and Keno from the prohibition, particularly given that lottery enjoys widespread popularity as a form of gaming in Australia, especially among communities with lower socioeconomic status.
The RGA has been diligently collaborating with the national government and the financial services industry since 2021 to implement this credit card restriction. Furthermore, in October 2023, RGA participated in Responsible Gaming Awareness Week in conjunction with New South Wales to increase public understanding of responsible gaming behaviors and accessible support resources.
The organization expresses profound apprehension regarding unlicensed wagering platforms that focus on Australian citizens. They harbor anxieties that these platforms circumvent Australian regulations, evade tax obligations, and expose users to potential harm.
This development coincides with Australia’s ongoing struggle to address illicit internet gambling. These platforms are detrimental to the nation as they fail to contribute taxes and provide no safeguards for those engaging in gambling. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) was recently compelled to intervene and issue a formal caution to one such entity, Best Bookies Price Pty Ltd, for operating unlawful gambling services.
