ACMA Blocks Pokies.net, One of Its Largest Blocking Requests

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has requested that the nation’s internet service providers (ISPs) restrict access to thepokies.net, labeling it one of its most substantial blocking requests to date.

An ACMA probe discovered that the website was running online casino-style games that are forbidden in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, rendering it unlawful.

The ACMA stated that the blocking would be among the most high-profile since the regulatory tool was implemented in November 2019, as the website’s estimated payments have reached tens of millions of Australian dollars, and Similarweb data indicates that the site has approximately 30,000 Australian visitors each month.

“We have received more grievances concerning thepokies.net this year than any other illegal gambling website, and it is clearly causing substantial harm to the Australian community,” said ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin.

“Complaints range from individuals who have lost substantial sums of money due to the website refusing to pay out deposits and winnings, to individuals who have been harassed by the website. By blocking access to these sites, we are sending a strong message that the ACMA can and will take action to stop unlawful operators targeting Australians.”

If a site decides to hold onto your funds, and we know this occurs frequently, there’s no recourse.”

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is combating unlawful gambling by prohibiting websites, collaborating with the industry, pursuing legal action against violators, and informing the public. Since 2017, over 160 illicit gambling sites have withdrawn from Australia due to the ACMA’s revised regulations.

The ACMA has also requested internet service providers to restrict access to other websites that are violating Australian laws.

Azure Hand, Abo Casino, Betroom, 777Bay, Space Lilly, Jet Casino, Katsu Bet, and Winz have all been identified by the ACMA for rule violations.
